second hand car?
Hi. Saya adalah empunya second hand car, dan saya dan Kak I settled everything on our own without the help of third party. Was it hard? Nope. Was it a lot of hustle? YES!
Steps to get the business done.
1) Meet with the potential buyer/seller. Check the car. Ask anything appropriate. Like, the condition of the car, maintenance, fuel consumption, etc. And the PAYMENT. How much do you agree to sell/buy the car. Do some research on the pricing. By buying directly from the seller (rather than tokey cekik darah), you can save some money already, so do negotiate on the price. Ask about the payment method as well. Do the necessary things, loan, pinjam duit mak ayah kakak abang or cash out own money. TEST DRIVE!! The most important thing. Make sure you love the car (i.e. comfortable driving the car before buying it).
2) Once agreed, fix a deadline. By this date, the buyer must pay the amount that s/he must pay. The seller must give the car by this date. Set a date so both can show up at the JPJ to transfer the car ownership.
3) SELLER
- depends on the situation, some owners do not own the car 100%. The car might be under the company's name if they use certain schemes when they first bought the car. Make sure that the owner has full ownership of the car prior to selling it away. This might require the buyer to pay the full amount first.
- send the car to PUSPAKOM. Need to ensure that the car meets their requirement. Kak I had trouble with PUSPAKOM because of the tinting. Make sure you book an appointment with them, read through the rules and regulations (very carefully okay). THEY ARE VERY PARTICULAR. So please follow everything because once you fail the test, you need to book a new appointment, which might not be on the same day.
- cancel the road tax and insurance. Cancelling the insurance allows the owner to transfer old NCD to a new insurance when buying new car. Cancelling road tax is not necessary, but it will be very helpful for the buyer later when s/he needs to renew the road tax. If the seller does not cancel the road tax, the new owner needs to get an 'extension' from the insurance company so that the new road tax expiring date will tally with the insurance expiring date.
In my case, Kak I did not cancel the road tax. She renewed the road tax in December 2014, and I bought the car in January 2015 (meaning my insurance expires in January). She was kind enough to let me use the old road tax (=), jimat duit den). So next month, my road tax will expire. I need to ask my insurance company to give an extension for about 5 months, and after that, go to JPJ to renew the road tax for the duration of 6 months. So in July, I can get a new road tax and insurance as well. Wee no more confusion!
4) BUYER
- get the 'kaching' ready and pay to the seller.
- get a car insurance. Lots of choices out there, ask your dad, brother, husband or decide on your own. Make sure you buy the insurance prior to change of car ownership and set the first date of policy = day of changing ownership. If your name is not in the system yet, sia sia je dtg JPJ, you wont be able to get your thing done.
5) Be present at the JPJ to sign some paperwork. BOTH must be present. Would be helpful if you know which form to fill (forgot the name already, but it's just one form, very straight forward). Bring your IDs and grant. Settle the payment and the officer will print the new owner's name on the car's grant. YEAY!! (I didn't go through this, but if the old owner cancelled the road tax, I think, now is the perfect time to renew the road tax)
6) Payments. Other than the car payment, there are other fees that need to be settled. PUSPAKOM and JPJ fee (any other fee? forgot already). Please check their website/call to know the most updated amount. So, just make sure that both parties agree on who will pay each fee. See, by getting the procedure done on your own, you can save a bit. If you hire a runner, that itself will cost another 100 ringgit, at least. Trust me, it's not that hard, but you need a lot of patience.
Okay that's all. Please excuse my grammatical errors dear grammar Nazis!!!! Please also let me know if you need further clarification. =) Hope this helps.
